Home Buyers: Don’t forget to file for Homestead Exemption

By in Updates with 0 Comments

Here at Keller Knapp Realty, we’d like to take a moment to wish you Happy Holidays and remind you to file for your Homestead exemption if you purchased a home in 2022.

Homeowners may apply for homestead exemption on their primary residence.  You only need to apply once, the first year that you own the home.  If you purchased your first home, or moved into a new primary residence, be sure to apply before the deadline for your county (most Metro Atlanta counties have a deadline of April 1, 2023).

If you purchased a home that was the seller’s primary residence, your taxes will stay about the same if you also apply for homestead exemption.  If you miss the deadline, your taxes will go up because you will lose the exemption for 2023.

See the info below for information on your county and/or city!

Fulton County

Applications must be submitted on or before April 1, 2023.  City homestead exemptions vary for each of the 15 cities in Fulton County. Legal residents of these cities will have their basic homestead exemption applied (if any) when they apply to receive a basic Fulton County homestead exemption.

Homestead exemption applications are accepted year-round; however, to grant an exemption for the current tax year, we must receive your application no later than April 1, 2023.  However, please note that although we can accept homestead exemptions until April 1, we encourage eligible homeowners to apply for any new exemptions prior to March 15 to ensure your exemption appears on your 1st installment tax bill.

Gwinnett County

Deadline for submitting application, either online or by mail, is April 1, 2023.
